Day 16

Captain slog. Day 16 of our mission. No visits today but 2 significant milestones passed. 1000 miles completed and 5 countries visited. We had been told by the locals that today would be difficult. They were not wrong. We left at 9.30 in the most horrendous rain storm. Waterproofs made no difference. We were soaked instantly. We set off on the A1, one of the main roads South. Traffic was heavy but we used the hard shoulder to protect ourselves a bit.

Unfortunately it didn’t protect us from the spray from the lorries. We stopped after 12 miles and tried to look cheerful for a photo commemorating the 1000 mile mark. Karl was struggling with his shoulder again so spent some time in the van. Karl was getting really touchy because we had been away for over 2 weeks and in all that time he hadn’t had a KFC so that was lunch decided. We stopped at Newry for lunch, just for Karl. What we hadn’t planned for was the most ridiculous long, steep hill out of town. The wind had got up and mixed with the hills was making progress very difficult. 51 miles in Karl came back out to join me.

I think he was getting jealous of me having all that fun struggling up the hills in the wind. We arrived in Drogheda, around 30 miles from Dublin, totally knackered. Each day further on is taking its toll on us more and more. Tomorrow is as close to a rest day as we are going to get. 20 miles to Donabate Dc and another 10 into Dublin. A few pints of the black stuff tomorrow I think. After all, it is my birthday!
