Day 7

Today was a day of mixed emotions. This morning we celebrated Peter’s birthday. This evening we said goodbye to Matt. This morning we started early. Breakfast at 6.30 to leave at 8. We ate very little at breakfast as we had been promised bacon rolls in Harlow Metro store. We arrived at store at 8.15 to be greeted by store manager Steph West and members of her team all wearing charity T shirts and holding a banner. A lovely welcome.

After the photos we went to the staff room for anything we wanted to eat or drink. We sat and chatted for half an hour but a long day awaited us had to move. Rob Clarke who had ridden his static bike in store the previous day had raised £122. Steph promised to keep collecting through the day and she also pledged half of the up and coming beach bonanza fundraiser this weekend. How generous. Steph, you and your team are all absolute stars. Thank you so much for you support. Off to Huntingdon Extra.

Around 16 miles down the road, Karl asked for a stop as his right achilles was playing him up. Matt strapped it up but with no real success. After 22 miles Karl did the right thing and got in the van. I pushed on alone. We arrived at Huntingdon store at 1pm, 57 miles done. We were greeted by flags and balloons at the store entrance along with refreshments. After the photos we went to the staffroom for lunch. Matt used the time to work on Karl’s ankle and placed it in an ice sock. We left Huntingdon for Peterborough DC. About 25 miles from the depot Karl got back on his bike and although he was still in pain it was bearable. We got to the DC dead on 4pm and again greeted by a group of managers and some food. 4 miles later we got to the hotel. Today was the furthest we had travelled so far, 85 miles. Tomorrow looks like an easier day of around 55 so hopefully that will help Karl’s injury.

Today was Matt’s last day and we said goodbye to him at the hotel. Matt fitted so well into the team and gave us excellent directions as well as the treatment we needed. He will be missed by all of us. Tomorrow is Jack’s first day on the team and we all look forward to working with him. So our first week is over already. We have covered 462 miles, visited 6 DCs, 5 stores and 2 countries. Not bad for 2 middle aged nightshift managers with physiques more suitable for darts than riding a bike!
